ACADEMIC 7
Heading 6
How to approach the task
-
This task initially looks very different from the charts and tables that we may be more familiar with, but in fact it's a simple case of two snapshots of the same thing at different points in time, but instead of numerical data there are some different physical features.
-
So the approach is pretty similar to other Task 1 tasks: try to identify some categories, and from there come up with a structure for the response.
-
The most basic subdivision is simply before and after but I don't think we should use that as the basis for the structure. That is, we shouldn't write a paragraph describing the natural physical features of the island in paragraph one and then all the tourist facilities in after the construction in paragraph 2. Don't do it like that.
-
Looking at the 'after' map, we can see that everything that was there initially is still there. Nothing has been taken.
-
In terms of additional features, there are
-
some accommodation buildings
-
a restaurant
-
a reception centre
-
a pier with some boats around the pier
-
some paths and vehicle tracks
-
a beach that may have been developed for swimming
-
-
I think we can group these features into three categories.
-
One: accommodation which we could also include the reception centre
-
Two: infrastructure which includes the pier and the two different kind types of roads, namely, the track and the footpath
-
Three: leisure and recreation facilities, such as boating, swimming, and dining.
-
-
Thus, we would have three categories to structure a response around. They are accommodation, infrastructure, and leisure facilities.
Sample response
The two maps show show the main natural and man-made features on a small 200 meter long island before and after the construction of tourist facilities. There is no indication regarding whether this construction has already occurred or whether it is planned, so for the sake of this task, it is understood that the facilities in the second illustration are yet to be constructed.
The first illustration simply shows the bare geographical features of the island while the second shows the facilities to be constructed. These facilities can be categorized into three broad types: transport infrastructure, accommodation facilities, and leisure facilities. These will be described in more detail below.
The planned transportation infrastructure includes a small circular vehicle track, some walking tracks, and a pier for small boats and yachts.

Turning to accommodation facilities, we can see that total of fifteen huts will be constructed in two circular arrangements - a group of six at the western end of the island and nine in the center of the island. A reception office will be built between these two groups of huts.
Thirdly, a number of leisure facilities will be constructed for visitors to the island. Tourists may go swimming at the beach, take a cruise on a yacht from the pier, or dine at the a restaurant that overlooks the northern coast of the island.
In short, we can say that planned tourist facilities on the island may be categorized into three groups, which could serve as a basis for planning the construction .
